WHAT IS GATE:
Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering commonly known from its abbreviation GATE is an Entrance Examination organized to admit candidates in Ph-Engineering the Institutions, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Sciences (IIS) and many more popular Engineering Institutions. Few educational Institutions select candidates for them for PhD through GATE only. In Tamil Nadu, there are seat allotments for GATE pass-out candidates including Anna University.
Who Conducts GATE Examinations?
Indian Institute of Sciences, along with seven IIT’s Conducts GATE examination, on behalf of Human Resources Development of Central Government for India. IIT Kanpur is responsible to conduct GATE this year.
HOW STUDENTS ARE ADMITTED AFTER GATE?

Who can write GATE?
The candidates who have qualified in under graduation degree in Engineering, technology, and Architecture. The candidates who are in the final year in the event Academic year may also apply for GATE. The candidates who have completed four year BS and who are in the final year of the same course may also apply for writing GATE. The candidates who have completed post graduation in science, Mathematics, statistics, and computer Applications and the candidates who are in the final year of such Ph courses can apply.
The candidates who have completed 5 year Engineering course and dual degree can also write this examination.
The candidates who have passed in Integrated M.Sc and BSMS and those who are in the final year can also write this examination.
The candidates who have completed than AMIE and AMIC also Eligible to write this examination.
What are added modifications of GATE?
Besides the usefulness of GATE in Ph and PHD courses, now public sector organizations consider GATE qualification to offer jobs in than concerns. The organizations Bharath electronics, Hindustan Petroleum, National Thermal power corporation, SAIC offer jobs based on GATE qualification. It is necessary the candidates have to apply to such organization with GATE mark certificate.
Present changes in GATE:
1.All the 22 papers of GATE will be conducted in on-line. Out of this, few questions have to be answered in numbers, other questions will be of multiple choice.
2.Before the commencement of examination the photographs and finger print of the candidates will be recorded by BIO-Metric information methods.
3.It becomes mandate that the candidates have to apply only in on line, not by the earlier methods.
4.The marks of the GATE examinations will be considered valid from the date of announcement of the examinations.
What is the nature of these examinations?
GATE examinations are conducted of Engineering. 22 subjects namely.

Only one branch has to be chosen by the candidates. In all the papers there will be few questions in language and Analytical skills (General Aptitude).
In XE papers the question paper in Engineering Mathematics in Compulsory. The candidates have to select two subjects among the subjects.
Fluid mechanics, material sciences, solid mechanics, thermo dynamics, polymer science and Engineering, and food Technology.
In XL the question paper in chemistry is compulsory. Besides the question paper also consist of general Aptitude questions. The candidates have to select two subjects among the subjects, Bio- chemistry, Botany, micro biology, Zoology and food technology.
WHAT ABOUT MARKS AND EVALUATION PATTERN OF GATE?
In this three hours duration examination, 65 multiple choice type questions will be there which has 100 mark in total.
All the GATE papers will have General Aptitude question, which has 15 marks from this year the candidates, has to write two types of responses, few questions, have to be answered in numbers. To execute this is the virtual key board will be provided to the candidates. It is informed no negative marks for this section. The other question will be of multiple choices native, for this type wrong answers will have Negative marks.

How students are selected for PG Engineering students in Tamil Nadu?
In Tamil Nadu the post Graduate students are selected by Tamil Nadu common Entrance test (TACET). The students who are qualified in this examination are given seat in single window system for the Government quota in engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu.
When GATE is conducted for this comment Academic year?
In Tamil Nadu on Line GATE Examinations are conducted on Jan,31, FEB 1, 7, 8, 14 from 9 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 5 pm in the cities Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigal, Erode, Kanyakumari, Karur, Madurai, Nagercoil, Namakkal, Puduchery, Salem, Tanjore, Thiruchengode, Thiruvannamalai, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Vellore, Villupuram, and Virudunagar.
When to apply and how to apply?
To apply in online the necessary details are available in
gate.iitk.ac.in 2015. From Sep 1, 2014 the candidates are supposed to apply on or before 11.59 any of oct 1, 2014. The candidates who wanted to change their centres have to apply on or before November 21, 2014. The details like photo, signature, necessary document have to be submitted only through on-line.
The fee for applying for GATE is Rs. 1500/- for General and OBC candidates and for SC, ST and physically handicapped the charges is RS.750/- and these charges can be paid through SBI and AXIS Bank and it can also be paid through net banking or e-challan.
