Scholarships galore

For those keen to study abroad we bring you a list of scholarships that you may want to consider.



The Charles Wallace Scholarship



The scholarships come out in January and August for short research/professional visits and writer/translator fellowships, respectively. The trust gives 10 to 15 grants towards the costs of short visits to the United Kingdom by academic research scholars and professionals every year. The grants are contributions towards the costs of a visit of three weeks to a month. Applicants planning to stay longer may supplement this grant from other sources. Applicants need to be Indian citizens between the ages of 25 and 45, with a good knowledge of English. They should have completed their studies and possess four or more years of research/professional experience. Aspirants may log on to www.britishcouncil.org or email [email protected] for details.



There are a host of awards under these scholarships at different institutions. These include the writer fellowship at the University of Kent (three months); writer fellowship at the Centre of Commonwealth Studies, University of Stirling (three months); translator fellowship at the British Centre for Literary Translation, University of East Anglia (two months) and the Iqbal Sarin visiting fellowship in journalism at the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (three months). Applicants should be Indian citizens (between 25 and 45) and have completed their PG studies in the said area of specialisation. Those with five to seven years professional experience are preferred. Czech Republic Scholarships



Scholarships are offered for Masters and Ph.D (two each) studies in agriculture and electrical/ electronics/mechanical engineering. In agriculture, only doctoral fellowships are offered. The scholarships entitle you to receive 7000 CZK (Czech crowns) per month for a Masters and 7,500 CZK per month for a Ph.D. Travel costs (to and fro) need to be borne by you. Aspir-ants must have a good academic record with at least 60 per cent marks in the relevant subject at the Bachelors level/Masters programme and at least 60 per cent marks at the Masters level in the field of study or an equivalent qualification in the subject selected. Gates Cambridge Scholarship



The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has scholarships for postgraduate or research studies at Cambridge University. The Foundation selects around 90 scholars from around the world annually. Applicants must first apply to a university for admission. The respective academic department at Cambridge then evaluates the applications.


The department then recommends the best applicants to the trust. As far as eligibility goes, entrants must have a first class or high second-class honours degree or equivalent from a recognised university and must secure admission to the Cambridge University in any full-time residential course.
