The Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships for the 2011-12 session, supporting Ph.D. and M.Phil studies at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge, UK, have been announced. Three scholarships will be awarded of £35,000 to each Ph.D. student for up to three years.

An endeavour marked in honour of the Indian PM, a graduate and Honorary Fellow of St. John’s, the scholarships were launched in Delhi in 2007. These aim to enable academically outstanding Indian students (in subjects like Science and Technology, Economics and Social Sciences) to study at the college. The scholarships are fully funded: academic fees, international airfares, monthly stipend to cover living expenses and expenses incurred towards a UK visa. The scholarships are being sponsored by corporate houses Rolls Royce and British Petroleum.

Aspiring Indian nationals must be below 35 years. They should not already have had significant exposure to UK education or received UK government funding. They should hold a postgraduate degree from a reputed/recognised Indian university/institution with a first class award (UG and PG) in the relevant subject/field.

The selection process will also consider evidence of a student’s leadership qualities, which will be assessed from personal statements such as extracurricular activities and/or evidence of having made a difference to society. A selection committee, comprising a nominee from each sponsor, a panel of academics and others, selected by the college will be set up in India to make recommendations to the college. Now open, the applications for the scholarships will close on December 31. For details, visit www.britishcouncil.org.in/drmanmohansinghscholarships
