Pathway Centres for children, a Chennai-based NGO that has been working with the differently-abled for 35 years, has instituted two awards to honour two students (one girl and one boy) from below the poverty line, who have completed their 10th standard from government schools.

Pathway will select at least 10 students (5 boys and 5 girls) annually who have excelled in education and other fields, out of which two will receive the scholarship.

The other eight will have the benefit of a mentor, and will also receive the support of Pathway in terms of payment of school fees and other incidentals.

The first set of scholarships will be for the next academic year 2011-12.

Both these students will be awarded Rs.25, 000 each for the academic year, and will be put on the Pathway list of ‘Most Deserving' students, which will make them eligible to attend all their special 'Learning Sessions'.

Criteria for selection includes their academic performance (as indicated by the marks awarded to the child in the final public/Government examination), inputs provided by the school regarding the child's performance in curricular and co-curricular activities as well inputs from parents and friends and on a personal testimony submitted by the student outlining the achievements, struggles and sacrifices.

While the scholarship for the boy is christened ‘The Pathway Judge William Sheffield Scholarship', the scholarship for the girl student is called ‘The Pathway Prasad Scholarship – For All Round Excellence'.

Those students who will complete their 10th standard in March 2011 are eligible for this scholarship.
