Scholarship support to India

Pittsburgh, USA based Duquesne University (DU) is offering Indian students two scholarships worth $200,000 towards four years of undergraduate studies in the Fall of 2011. Announcing the scholarships in Mumbai, Helen Auckland, Assistant Director of International Admissions, DU said, “We are happy to strengthen our commitment to Indian students through these scholarships.” The medium-sized, private university that enrols over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students across programmes in natural and environmental sciences, leadership, business, nursing, health sciences, pharmacy, law, education, music and the liberal arts, is home to students from over 80 countries, including over 60 students from India. Besides the scholarships announced, all foreign students are reviewed for the Libermann Scholarship that offers financial support ranging from $4,000-14,000 per year depending on a student’s academic performance, area of interest and country of origin.

Showing a modest increase in the year-on-year number of Indian students, Auckland said, “We find that for undergraduate degrees Indian students tend to show an interest in our School of Business, School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, School of Pharmacy and Computer Science. At the graduate level, there is an interest in our School of Business and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Our new courses Sustainability MBA (or SMBA, an MBA programme from the School of Business) and Masters programme in Biotechnology might be interesting for Indian students.”

The selection process for the scholarship involves seeing that students have done well at the secondary school level and that they were competitive, their interests, extra-curricular activities and their overall personalities. “Generally speaking, students with higher scores achieve more results, but their field of study, level of rigour in the field of study, and overall academic records will make a difference as well,” said Auckland.
