Community Colleges by University Grants Commission

What are community colleges? Prof H.Devaraj, the vice chairman for University Grants commission clarified that, Community colleges give education above secondary level and below the graduation level to the students the skills according to the needs of the local industry and community to increase the employment opportunities.

To-day Career oriented education is needed and related skills are needed to make the young people to fit into the work force. So, a sort of remedial education is needed and this is the objective of community colleges. At this juncture, the university grants commission decided to start 100 community colleges in the year.

The vice chancellor H.Devaraj said that 330 Institutions had applied for permission to start community colleges in the country and 100 institutions out this will be selected.

University Grants commission have constituted a 5 member committee to select 100 colleges, Many applications are sent from Tamil Nadu also. It is also said, that community colleges would get funds up to one crore every year and the funds will be based the need of the colleges.
