Vacancies in Engineering Colleges

The matrix of vacancies of seat in Engineering colleges, released in press shows that the Number of seats of Intake capable of 538 colleges in 2,11,777.  The statistics says that out of this, in the year 2014, 1,10,785 seats was filled and 1,00,989 seats were vacant, as on 2014, there are 538 Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu.  In 2010 there were 472 colleges and the total intake capable is 1,20,000. The number of seats filled are 1,11,883 and just 8137 seats were vacant.  This shows that vacant seats for Engineering courses and Anna University and its affiliated colleges have increased 12 fold in the last 5 years.  The identifiable reasons are, the mushrooming of colleges and the loosing of charm of the Engineering course.

1.1   lac seats were allotted through single window in 2010.  It increased to 1.27 lacs and to reach 1.26 lac in 2012 & 2013 respectively.

For every increase intake a year, there has been a core spending rise in the number of vacant seats.  At the same time, the increase in intake runs parallel to the rise in the number of colleges as well.

The numbers of colleges were simply 472 in 2010 and now it is 538.
