The state Government has taken over Annamalai University, in the recent development. But according to the rulings of Madras High court, the fee structure of the state Govt is not applicable to Annamalai University.

A writ was filed by M.Amira Fathima and 189 other students in the second year stating that Raja Muthaiah Medical College, a constituent of Annamalai University is collecting extraordinary fee. Justice V.Ramasubramanian dismissed this cost. The college continued to call Rs.5.54 lac to MBBS and 3.80 lac for BDS.

When the petitioners joined the courses in 2013-2014, the university was under the control of Founder family. Subsequently the University was taken over by Tamil Nadu Government.

In the Academic year 2014-2015 the students joined were asked to pay the last year fee.

This was challenged by some of the students. According to advocate general A.C Somayaji, and his assistant advocate R.Sureshkumar, the continuous mismanagement of the university and the colleges under the university for more than two decades ruined the financial condition of the University and it suffers from deep financial deficit. This was accepted by the judge and said the existing fee structure is needed considering the income and expenses conditions of the university.
