Degree for the name sake

Getting a degree is for the status or for knowledge? It is obvious many people are running after name sake degree after the universities? It is create puzzle in the minds of Academicians and Educationists.

The University grants commission (UGC) has instructed and directed all the universities to follow the norms for awarding the degree. This necessity has come because of the up coming of many private so called deemed universities.

Once, only the state and central Government universities existed, this question of suspecting the standard of an awarded degree never arises. Now, creating very strict norms to award graduation becomes the order of the day.

Recently UGC has referred in its notification in the leading dailies, about the degree with the 

Nomenclature (names) the commission has not notified in the gag ether.

The circular issued by university Grants commission explained that the candidates with such a kind of show or fancy degrees which are not mentioned in UGC gag ether will face litigation in spite of their passing in National Eligibility Test (UGC_NET).

The list of names of degrees to be issued is detailed by University Grants commission.

Besides private and Deemed universities, the state-non universities also must take note of issuing this kind of degree, for example, few state run universities in Tamil Nadu also are giving this kind of degrees. A premier college in Coimbatore affiliated to Bharathiar University offers a 3 year B.com under the names

1. E-commerce

2. Computer application

3. Professional accounting

4. Accounting and Finance

5. Retail Marketing

6. Business process and services

7. Financial system and foreign trade.

It is estimated around 2000 students are gains this certificates.

This university withdraw its 4-year B.com degree after the University grants commission, cancelled the programmed following a protest by Delhi University students.

C.Pichandy the Vice President of the Association of University Teacher's clearly told the state and deemed Universities should not violate or deviate the rules of the UGC. He listed the problems faced by the students of English literature when the degree was offered as BA language and literature instead of BA English literature.
