A statistics on Polytechnic Institutions

According to a Government Auditing statement, that these are Govt. Polytechnic Institution in 11 districts. Regarding the existing polytechnic institutions are concerned, there is a decline is the number of admissions also in the pass percentage.

Polytechnic institutions are meant to offer 3 years for various Engineering branches. The candidates who has passed their X and XII, IIT qualified students are eligible to join in these courses. The Directorate of Technical Education Co-ordinates the technical education in the state of Tamil Nadu. According to the statistics as on March 2013, 30 Government polytechnic Institutions, 34 Government Aided Institutions and 395 self financed Institutions are functioning in Tamil Nadu.

The committee has taken 10 government polytechnic Institutions and 9 Govt aided institutions as sample for investigation and research.

According to the statistics as on March 2013, out 32 districts in Tamil Nadu, only 19 districts have Govt polytechnic colleges. Government has granted permission to open another 10 colleges. 8 institution were started in the districts where there these colleges already. In fact, in the districts Ariyalur and Erode where there are no colleges, none of the polytechnic colleges were started.

As on date there are no polytechnic colleges in district in Tamil Nadu. In XIIth five year plan, the Directorate of Tech Education stated, when than were 447 colleges, one college is needed for 1 lac population, and according to this 722 colleges are needed. So, 2020, it is proposed to start 275 new colleges. But in 2012-13, only the Govt colleges and 15 financed colleges were formed.
