 Complex Language issues in India

The language survey in India reveals that there are 780 languages and 66 different scripts in India.  The base line survey of Indian languages by people’s Linguistic survey of India announces this detail.  Arunachal Pradesh has 90 languages.

According to researcher there are 55 languages in Assam, 48 in Gujarat, 39 in Maharashtra and 38 in West Bengal.

According to 2011 census there are about 122 spoken languages by more than 10,000 people, out of what 22 are the scheduled languages.  Likewise, there are language spoken by less than 10,000 people.  There languages are spoken in tribal areas, nomadic communities and interior of North Eastern part.

This is the biggest linguistic Survey.  Irish linguistic scholar, George Abraham Grierson conducted Linguistic Survey of India from 1898 to 1928.

Regarding tribal languages Jharkhand had only two scripts but 16 different tribal languages. In West Bengal there are 9 scripts.

Dr. Devy’s survey express that the N.E parts of India have one the highest per capita language densities in the world.
