A blitz of student culture

Updated on: Thursday, January 12, 2012

It was an extravaganza of sorts for college students across Coimbatore as the city witnessed one of the biggest cultural fests in recent years. “Yuva-2012,” organised by Hello FM at Sri Krishna College of Arts & Science, started the year on a high note.

The event attracted more than 1,500 participants from over 50 colleges across town. The gala event, which featured a potpourri of events such as, fashion parade, As You Like It, Rangoli, Kavidhai, Instrumental Light Music, RJ Hunt, singing and dance, etc., allowing students to showcase their talents to their heart’s content.

Several bands kept the party mood going with the audience urging them on and friendship seemed to be the theme of the day.

“The light music contest had so many cool performances — the Thiruda Thiruda, improv-rock version, a love song dedicated to Romeo and Juliet and some fabulous indigenous compositions were all very scintillating. And even though we referred to colleges by lot numbers only, the crowd cheered every act.

So many wanna-be ‘Suryas’ played a Vaarnam Aayiram guitar song too! The dance-off also saw some outstanding props; NGP College in particular performed a ‘Jai Hanuman’ number involving different formations and lifting mountains, that won them first place,” remarks Kaushigha Ramkumaar, one of the coordinators and RJ at the FM.

Professionals from academies such as Footloose and Kalakshetra were invited to judge the events - a tough job given the overwhelming participation! While the Rangoli room was a mélange of delightful colours and creativity, the ramp walk sizzled with designer oomph. “Ethnic themes, detachable saris, tattooed bodies - we saw them all.

Some of the dresses were made entirely of CDs, audio tape, peacock quills, cellotape and even buttons! Overall, the hearty atmosphere and organized way in which the events were executed throughout the day ensured that everyone had a terrific time,” says Gowtham Dennis, a VisCom student from Hindustan College.

If the themed fashion contest was the highlight of the day, the RJ Hunt and Dumb Charades was most amusing with the students laughing themselves silly during the course of the events.

Overall, Sri Krishna College prevailed on their home turf, walking away with the Rolling Trophy. Rakshitha, one of the students in the audience commented, “It was truly a wonderful day, and I hadn’t seen such a turn out at any event in ages.

We were all thoroughly entertained and hoping to see ‘Yuva’ become an annual affair in Coimbatore!”
