IIT Roorkee introduces new Grading System to improve students pass percentage

iitr The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R), has introduced two new grades in its Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) grading system.

According to a report in a national daily, a professor from the institute said, "There have been many cases of students not being able to qualify their exams in the first attempt, due to which they had to appear in supplementary exams. As per the previous CGPA grading, the minimum a student could get was the D grade which was equal to four points but under the new grading system, an additional D+ grade equivalent to five points, the minimum passing average, has been introduced. This would work in the favour of students who struggle to reach the minimum CGPA".

The grading system is prepared for students who do not score the minimum eligibility i.e. 5 CGPA. An official said, "This is done to help the students who come from 'weaker academic background', as it would improve a broader evaluation process."

Further in a report, Dean (Academics), Pramod Agarwal said, "We have brought about a few changes in the notations to our previous CGPA system but it is not something which is out of the ordinary."

IIT Roorkee has 18 academic departments covering various programmes such as Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.
