Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) to induct 63 new Courses

tnouIt has been three months since TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) has been waiting for an approval from UGC to get a recognition. It has finally been granted the same on Tuesday. It had earlier stopped issuing admission forms for its courses for 20 days and has resumed the same now.

As per newspaper reports, the Vice Chancellor of the TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) Chandrakantha Jeyabalan said that the university has introduced 63 new courses of which 20 UG and PG degree/recognition courses are being presented this scholastic year.

Amongst the new courses are Islamic studies, police administration, gerontology, archaeology and epigraphy, museology and conservation, child rights and child protection.

18 skill-based diploma/ certificate courses which include childhood care and education, acupuncture science, apparel and fashion design, and catering assistant, are being introduced exclusively in the private community colleges that are approved by or affiliated to TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) out of the 63 new courses.

Currently there are 217 such community colleges across Tamil Nadu.

According to the TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) , more than 95 percent of graduates of community colleges had secured employment. Also, new buildings will be constructed in five zonal centres-Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Dharmapuri and Rs 20 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of these buildings along with constituent community colleges.

Earlier, Union Human Resources Minister Smriti Irani had said that recognition of TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) , Annamalai University and Hindi Prachar Sabha was cancelled for violating norms in offering open and distance learning (ODL) programmes.

Jeyabalan, said that after going through the affidavits submitted, the UGC on Tuesday allowed TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) to offer approved programmes through distance mode during 2015-16.
