BJ Institute of Research in collaboration with the Institute of Jainology launched a six-month certificate course on understanding manuscripts on Saturday in the presence of historian Madhusudan Dhaky, Jain scholar Kumarpal Desai and other Indology experts. The organizers said the need for original research and dearth of experts motivated them to offer the course.

Professor Ramji Savaliya of BJ Institute said that most participants in the course are postgraduate or doctoral students interested in understanding manuscripts. "So far, the subject was covered only by students of disciplines such as history or Indology but we decided to offer it as a separate weekend course when we saw that inter-disciplinary studies have gone back to original source materials - be these science, literature or religion. Some students are engineers and other professionals who wants to read ancient scriptures," he said.

Officials said they want to involve students in research work based on manuscripts written in Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic, Persian and other languages.
