Percentage of women students drop in IIM

Updated on: Monday, June 29, 2015

It seems like another of the disappointing news, the drive organised by the IIM's to step up gender diversity in admissions has suffered a sudden setback. The number of women qualifying the exams for IIMs has gone even further down than before.

The intake of women in four of the top IIMs- IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozhikode has dropped by as much as 31 percent in the academic session 2015-2017, after being compared to statistics of the last year.

Recording a high drop of women students is IIM Ahmedabad, where the drop in the percentage of women only accounts to 14 percent in the current academic year when compared to 29 percent in the last year. The women at IIM Lucknow now amount to a meagre 32 percent in comparison to last year's 46 percent while IIM Kozhikode that made history by admitting 53.6 percent women in the year 2013 is now only left with 25.4 percent since then.

Meanwhile, another controversy surrounding IIMs has been the proposal of the draft IIM Bill. It has received enormous flak from the IIMs who have rallied against the curtailment of the academic and financial autonomy of the business schools in the freedom to decide on fee structure and remunerations of the faculty.

Complaints regarding the bill have been registered the human resource development ministry asking it to re-draft it in consultations with three major IIMs- Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Bangalore.
