Constraints in B.Ed - 4 years program

Recently the new regulation of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) permits 4 year integrated Bed, )B.Sc, B.Ed/ B.A-B.Ed).

But, now academician in their analysis felt, that students from Tamil Nadu will not be able to continue this programme because, in Tamil Nadu the Teacher Education and Arts and science Universities function separately.

With respect to NCTE new norms, the 4 year integrated programme is meant to. Integrate general studies consisting of sciences (B.Sc, B.Ed) and social sciences, Humanities (BA, Bed) and professional studies consisting of education, pedagogy of school subjects and practical related to tasks and functions of a school teacher.

As per the new system introduced by NCTE, B.Sc, B.Ed and B.A, B.Ed, is for 4 academic years. This comprises of school based experience and internship in teaching period.

The students to begin with complete graduation for 3 years and do B.Ed for another 2 years.

Here the concern is  most of the students who want to do the B.Ed are from economically backward.

The students may find this difficult financially to spend 4 years.

Dr.Kumaran, former Head of the Education Department in Madras University said,

“After the Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University was formed in 2008, a committee was set up and 4 year integrated B.Ed was mooted. But, later it was dropped. Such programme should have 60-70% academic and 30% education content. But, such an integrated B.Ed programme is not feasible in the state in near future”.

But C.Pichandy, Vice President of the Association of University Teachers said that the programme of Integrated BA, Bed and B.Sc, B.Ed is possible.
