IIT - curriculum change towards Research

Focusing towards the output of research and motivate learning flexibility Indian Institute of Technology is going ahead for major revision and curriculum changes. Now Indian Institute of Technology is looking for, introducing credits to research projects even in under Graduation level.

Prof.Bhaskar Ramamurthi the director of IIT Madras said that IIT has recently formed a committee of young faculty to recommend for, possible changes which could be made in the curriculum based on the plan 2014-2020.

The Director said that they are looking for more flexibility in UG level itself and wanted to include credit for research and more elective subjects. In fact the UG level syllabus revision has to done 10 years ago.

The institute wanted to increase laboratory training very much. It is planned to provide credit and importance to research in UG level.

It will be structured that the core course component makes up around 50 percent and opportunities for multidisciplinary programmes and diversification through electives will be maximized. The student will get an opportunity to choose the electives.

Prof. V.G. Idichandy, former deputy Director and professor emeritus at IIT-M’s ocean Engineering welcomed the changes in the curriculum.
