Foreign varsity bill not a threat to Indian players: Planning commitee

Private education providers in the country should not feel threatened by the Foreign University Bill, Advisor (Education), Planning Commission, Madan Mohan said today.
"I don't feel the private players should feel threatened with the passage of the Bill," he said at a conference here.

He also dismissed suggestions that some of the provisions of the Bill will discourage foreign varsities from coming to the country.

Though one of the provisions states that foreign institutes with intention to open campus in India will have to deposit Rs 50 crore as corpus fund, he said the deposit money would not be a major issue for them.

Participants at the conference favoured passage of the key reforms bills for the higher education sector to improve and ensure quality education.

Special Secretary in Higher Education department of the Uttar Pradesh Government Anita Mishra sought enhanced support from the Centre for raising the standard of higher education in her state.
