Counseling for faculty positions in TN medical colleges cancelled

Updated on: Thursday, November 25, 2010

All counseling sessions for filling the 300 posts of Associate Professor and Assistant Professor in government medical colleges that had to earlier begin on Nov 23 have been cancelled by The Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

The previous counseling had been conducted in 2009 on May 18. The counseling that has been cancelled was due in February this year and it's cancellation would impact not only students but also the medical colleges that had been opened recently, according to members of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA).

TNGDA President S. Kanagasabapathy said that the delay in filling up the vacancies for teachers in medical colleges could lead to new colleges having to wait for recognition because the inspection to be conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI) had been due in December.

He further informed that medical colleges in places such as Kanyakumari, Dharmapuri, Vellore and Thiruvarur did not have teachers for subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, paediatrics, ENT, medicine and surgery.

He added, "Doctors are willing to work at medical colleges in Thiruvarur, Dharmapuri and Villupuram and have also been designated rural medical colleges. Our association has been insisting for the counseling to be conducted as soon as it will be possible.
