University of Madras Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said business schools should have the approval of the university before starting courses.

They start M.B.A courses with permission from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) but without university's affiliation. Hereafter, they have to obtain approval from the university before starting an academic year, he said. On Saturday, the university's syndicate rejected the appeal of St. Mary's School of Management to waive a fine of Rs.18 lakh charged by the university for running the courses without obtaining affiliation.

The syndicate also decided to offer training in National Eligibility Test and State Level Eligibility Test.
