A thumbnail sketch to guide you across some more popular engineering colleges in India...

Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad: ISM holds B.Tech programmes in Environmen-tal, Mineral, Mining, Mining Machinery, Petroleum and other branches of Engineering, five-year M.Sc Tech Integrated in Applied Geophysics and Applied Geology and M.Tech dual degrees to name a few.

BITS Pilani: this deemed university imparts BE (Hons.) in Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics & Instrumentation and Mechanical Engineering, and B.Pharm (Hons.). It also has campuses in Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.

Delhi Technological University (DTU): a Delhi University affiliate, it conducts BE programmes in Electronics & Communication, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Production & lndustrial, Computer, and Environmental Engineering, Polymer Science & Chemical Technology, IT as well as Biotechnology. Plus it offers B.Tech in Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, and Mechanical Engineering.

Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT): this Delhi University institution has on offer BE programmes in Electrical and Communication, Computer, Instrumentation and Control, Manufacturing Process and Automation, IT and Biotech.

BIT, Mesra: this deemed university provides BE in Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, IT, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Production Engineering besides B.Arch and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Admisison to BIT, Mesra is through the CBSE’s AIEEE.

Thapar University, Patiala (formerly Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology): of its total seats, half are available to open category candidates, those who have passed from schools, Boards or universities outside Punjab. Admission to this 50-plus-year-old institute is via the AIEEE.

Apart from these institutions, there are a host of National Institutes of Technology from Srinagar to Trichy and Surat to Silchar. You may also look at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIITs).

DTU and NSIT admit Delhi region applicants (those passing from schools in the city) through the University of Delhi’s Combined Entrance Examination while those from outside have to take the AIEEE route.
