Greater good

Prabin Sudhijan Samiti is an organisation started by senior citizens of the Taltala area. It awarded mementos to this year’s high scoring students in Madhyamik (Class X) and Ucchamadhyamik (Class XII) examination on August 29 at Taltala High School.

The idea is to see how much the older generation can help the younger generation to develop and contribute to society. As Dr Shaktipada Ghosh, one of the members of the organisation said, “We are an apolitical organisation, wanting to do good for society.”

The members of the organisation held respectable positions in their professional fields. As one of them said, “We don’t want today’s generation to simply go with the flow, without thinking of their fellow human beings and without contributing to society.”

Keeping these things in mind, the members of the organisation awards students who have done exceptionally well in the board examination. They think that this is going to encourage students to be disciplined, study hard and aim for higher goals in life. They have been doing this program since 1995.

This year they awarded seven students who have got over 80% in Madhyamik (Class X) and Ucchamadhyamik (Class XII) examination. There were five students from Madhyamik and two students from Ucchamadhyamik. They were each given a medal, a letter of appreciation, a memento and a pen.

Earlier students who used to get above 75% were awarded. This year onwards, there has been a change on the basis on which students were chosen; the reason being the change in the marking procedure of the West Bengal Board. Thus the number of students awarded this year was less than the number of students awarded last year.

The members of the organisation themselves contribute money to run the organisation. They take contributions from their well wishers but not from any other sources.
