College inaugurated at Tiruvannamalai

Minister for Higher Education, K. Ponmudy, inaugurated the college at its temporary premises in Thenangur village near Vandavasi, in the presence of Food Minister E.V. Velu.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Ponmudy elaborated how higher education has developed over the years in the State.

“Out of eight lakh engineering graduates coming out every year in India, 1.5 lakh are from Tamil Nadu. 7.5 lakh students wrote SSLC, 6.5 lakh wrote plus two and 5 lakh students have joined higher education including engineering college, arts and science colleges and polytechnics in the State.” Mr. Ponmudy said. The minister pointed out that nearly 55,000 engineering students got a fee waiver under the scheme for first-generation graduates last year and nearly 78,000 students benefitted this year.

District Collector M. Rajendran expressed the hope that the Tiruvalluvar University College, Vandavasi, would get a building in a year.

He also said that girls outnumbered boys in the admissions to the new college .

“Out of 231 students, 115 are boys and 116 are girls,” he said.

Tiruvalluvar University Vice Chancellor A. Jothimurugan delivered the welcome address.

Registrar Krishnamurthi delivered vote of thanks.

MLAs S.P.J.Kamalakannan, R.Sivanandham were among the participants.
