Instilling positive attitude in students

Books — classic, fiction and adventure — took centrestage at the inauguration of The Hindu Newspaper in Education programme at The Velammal International School in Panchetti on Wednesday.

Chief guest and Chief General Manager of State Bank of India (Chennai Circle) J. Chandrasekaran recalled the books with which he grew up. “Sherlock Holmes, Famous Five, Five Find-Outers and Dog and other books are what I read during my school days, which I continue to cherish the most. Be it novels, short stories or newspapers, cultivating the reading habit right from school days is very essential,” he added.

Mr. Chandrasekaran stressed the importance of utilising the school libraries. He recalled a few lighter moments and pranks played by his schoolmates in the library.

The event also saw students of primary classes effortlessly spell words like ‘aeroplane', ‘attachment' and ‘chocolate' to demonstrate the 501 new spellings they learnt from The Hindu Young World. K. Kothandaraman, Senior Principal, The Velammal International School, said the NIE programme helps students develop positive attitude, team building spirit and confidence. He also announced that this year is the silver jubilee of the Velammal Educational Trust.

S. Sridhar, Assistant Regional General Manager (Circulation), The Hindu, said the motto of the NIE programme is ‘Shaping young minds'. “The programme is aimed at sensitising children about contemporary issues in their daily lives and helping them develop critical thinking,” he said. Young World Quiz, Young World Painting, Online Quiz, Science Quiz and Speed Reading Competitions are among the programmes conducted as part of the NIE.
