Kerala against foreign varsities functioning in India

Updated on: Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The CPI(M)-led LDF government in Kerala has decided to oppose the Centre's proposal to allow foreign universities in the country, saying it will not improve the quality of education in any way.

The State has already conveyed its position on the matter to the Centre, Education Minister M A Baby said.

Replying to a calling attention motion in the assembly, he said the state was of the view that entry of foreign universities will only lead to commercialisation of education.

He disputed Centre's argument that the step will improve quality of higher education in the country. However, he said, the state welcomed co-operation between Foreign and Indian Universities on academic and faculty matters.

C Raveendranath (CPI-M) said foreign universities would destroy the tradition, culture and originality of Indian education.
