Focused and determined

This is the story of a young girl who once visited the office of her father’s boss and made up her mind to sit in the same chair as the gentleman concerned! The girl’s father Ranjit Singh, was a peon in the revenue department but seeing his daughter’s determination he decided to fund her studies though bank loans and money borrowed from other sources.

The young girl is called Sandeep Kaur and on May 6, her dreams came true. She made it through the Civil Services Examination and was ranked 138 in the open merit list!

So what motivated this girl from a small town in Punjab to sit for the Civil Services? Apparently the serial Udaan (which is the story of a girl from a lower middle class income group who becomes an Indian Police Service officer) and Kaur’s mother’s dream to see her daughter join the IAS.

Kaur has opted for the Punjab cadre, and what is more is that she wants to work against female foeticide and for the upliftment of girls in the state!

Kaur’s winning tips

* For the Mains, you must focus on writing — and there is a lot of it to be done. There are nine papers to be cleared and you may have to take two papers a day. So, you can imagine how much you will be putting pen to paper!

* Note: writing somewhere in the region of 200 words will get you around 20 marks.

* Taking mock tests will also help.

* You must study at least 15 to 18 hours a day, with healthy breaks for food and sleep in between.

* Time management is the key.
