The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology recently approved a research project for the preparation of quantum dots-based LED (Light Emitting Diodes) at Anna University, Chennai, under the Nanotechnology Initiatives programme.

A press release issued by the university said the Rs. 2.34-crore project for the “Preparation of directed self-assembly of GaN, InGaN based quantum dots suitable for fabrication of LEDs” was initiated at the Crystal Growth Centre. The centre, established based on a seed grant given by the State government for a “clean room” facility, is involved in the growth of laser crystals, superconducting materials, gem crystals and semiconductor and oxide nanomaterials. The centre is also a National Centre for Crystal Growth recognised by the University Grants Commission and has grown the first bulk GaAs and InP single crystals in the country, the release added.
