Seminars on economic meltdown

Even as speakers reiterate continuously that the global economic recession is in its last stages if not over, and that India has been spared from its worst effects, the University of Madras has been active in conducting seminars on the effects of the economic meltdown in its various aspects this month.

Psychological impact

First the Department of Psychology conducted a UGC-sponsored national seminar on ‘Psychosocial Impact of Economic Meltdown on Business Organizations and Employees' on March 5 and March 6 with members from industry and academia participating and presenting papers on providing support to the workers in the midst of crisis.

India's position

Then the Department of Economics held a seminar on the ‘Global Recession: Where India Goes' on March 12, with IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Madras Institute of Development Studies director Maria Saleth and other dignitaries.

Post-crisis

On March 16, the Department of Commerce organised an international conference on ‘Global Financial System in the post-crisis era: Issues, Opportunities and Challenges' with the chairman of the Economic Advisory COuncil to the Prime Minister C. Rangarajan participating.
