A national seminar on ‘Ethics and Praxis for Democratic Society,' organised by the Department of Philosophy of Arul Anandar College, Karumathur, was inaugurated by Christodoss Gandhi, Principal Secretary, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency. Lourdhunathan, Head, Department of Philosophy, welcomed the gathering. Rev. Fr. Pushparaj, Principal, presided. Rev. Fr. M. Arockiasamy Xavier, secretary, addressed the gathering. N. Muthumohan, Head, Department of Guru Nanak Devji Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, in his key note address, explained how people of different linguistic groups and religions practised their own culture and ways of worship in a democracy. George Joseph, Associate Professor, proposed a vote of thanks.

The Centre for Women's Studies of the college organised a programme on ‘Women's Issues' for girl students. The resource person, feminist writer Kutti Revathy, laid emphasis on women's educationP. Banumathi, Project Officer, welcomed the gathering and Mariathas Anne Mathusha proposed a vote of thanks.

Precision farming training was conducted for Therkar sub-basin farmers at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Agricultural College and Research Institute, in which a series of lectures on precision farming techniques for vegetable cropswere delivered by scientists. Professor and Head, KVK, S. Kumar, and scientists explained various techniques of raising vegetable crops.

A three-day training programme on precision farming on sugarcane was inaugurated by K. Vairavan, Dean, Agricultural College and Research Institute. P.J. Pandian, Head, IAMWARM Cell, Water Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, presided. A.R. Mohamed Haroon welcomed gathering and R. Indirani proposed a vote of thanks.

A seminar on ‘Global economic crisis and its impact on Indian economy' was inaugurated at Madura College by Dhulasi Birundha, Head, School of Economics, MK University. The Head, Department of Economics, S. Theenathayalan, welcomed the gathering. M.S. Meenakshisundaram, secretary, Madura College Board, presided. P. Kannan, co-ordinator of the seminar, proposed a vote of thanks.

A. Gopalakrishnan of H. H. Raja's College, Pudukottai; Albert Christopher Dhas of the American College; and K. Sadasivam of MK University addressed the technical sessions. The valedictory address was delivered by N. Manonmani, Senior Professor, School of Economics, MKU.

A State-level seminar on ‘Problems and perspectives in philosophy,' organised by the Department of Philosophy, was inaugurated by G. Bhaskaran, former Registrar of the Tamil University, Thanjavur. R. Murali, Head, Department of Philosophy, welcomed the gathering. M. Sugumaran, coordinator, presided. T.V. Krishnamoorthy, Principal, chaired the inaugural session. R. Anbazhagan proposed a vote of thanks.

A seven-day special camp was conducted by National Service Scheme volunteers of Madurai College at Chettikulam recently. It was inaugurated by Mr. Meenakshisundaram and P. Ramachandran, Vice-Principal. K. Jawahar, Youth Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra, spoke.

The Department of Rural Development Science and PG Department of Social Work of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar College, Usilampatti, conducted a workshop on ‘NGOs and rural development.' N. Saraswathy, Syndicate member, MK University, who inaugurated the workshop. M. Rajendran, Principal, presided . M. Rajiakodi, Head, Department of RDS, spoke. Daizyrani, Executive Director, Association for Rural Development, Meenakshipatti, the resource person, explained the causes of female infanticide. Joseph Vincent, founder-secretary, ARD, spoke. K. Raman proposed a vote of thanks.

The departments of botany and microbiology of Lady Doak College conducted an awareness programme for about 300 students studying biology in 25 higher secondary schools in and around Madurai. In his inaugural address, S. David Amirtharajan, Dean, Madurai Kamaraj University, focussed on the role of botanists in meeting food demands of the future. J. Jeyavenkatesh explained the use of various herbs. A panel discussion on plant science as a career was anchored by Muthuchezhian of School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, MKU, and Pamela Mohandoss, former Head, Department of Botany, Lady Doak College. Rachel Regi Daniel and R. Gunaseeli, heads, departments of botany and microbiology, welcomed the gathering.

The Department of Physics, in association with the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, organised a physics exhibition for school students. About 800 higher secondary students visited the exhibitionA news letter highlighting the activities of the Physics Department was released by Anne Helm. Beulah, PG Head of the department, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Mercy Pushpalatha presided. G. Vasanthi, UG Head of the department, proposed a vote of thanks.
