The rapidly advancing technology in the medical field has been opening up new dimensions, and putting more challenges before paediatricians. They should, therefore, update themselves with the latest developments to efficiently handle critical cases. This was the aim and objective of the First South Zone Conference on paediatric critical care which was held recently in Chitradurga.

The four-day event was jointly organised by the Basaveshwara Hospital, Chitradurga, and the India Paediatric Association (IPA) (Karnataka Chapter) for postgraduate students of paediatrics and working paediatricians. “The conference provided a platform, essentially for the PG students, to learn about the critical aspect of paediatric care in critical cases. Since the Department of Paediatrics demands high degree of study and knowledge, it is vital for the students to understand the important dimensions of the field,” said Abhishek Phadke, a PG student of Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Thiruvananthapuram.

He said that since the conference also included presentation of papers on specific issues, which was judged by adjudicators, the students got a chance to enhance their skills.

Dr. Phadke believes that such conferences also arm future paediatricians with adequate knowledge in handling critical cases with limited resources, mainly when they are working in suburban or rural areas. “ Since a good number of cases come from these areas, which largely face the shortage of hi-tech medical equipment, it was essential for the doctors to learn how to provide best treatment to the patients with the available medical resources.”

Same was the opinion of Netra Shirur, who is doing her internship at Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore.
