Work experience helpful in a law career

You have done your MBA and then taken up law. Also, your specialisation in MBA and your current field are not really interlinked or complementary. This suggests that you want to change your profession. In that case, are you sure you want to pursue a career as a lawyer? Or are you looking for a career where you can make use of your knowledge in both the fields?

If your answer is ‘lawyer,' take up practice now. Work for sometime, say a year or two, and introspect whether you want to continue. This work experience will also give you a fair idea about the different specialisations in the field and the kinds of roles that a lawyer can assume.

Then, based on this information, your interests and career aspirations, choose the future course of action. If you feel that you want to seriously pursue the profession, you can then go for LL.M. to get a specialisation. You can study the course in regular or distance mode.

If you are looking forward to a career where you can use your knowledge of law and business administration, you can seek employment in a company that has a role with such a job profile. But, remember that the scope of such roles is limited.

Organisations offering legal services, NGOs dealing with social work, or any other company that has a legal team are places where you can search for a job.

Before accepting an offer, go through the job description properly and gain clarity over what is expected from you by discussing it with your prospective managers and the HR personnel, to avoid disappointments.
