Karaikal NIT to offer EEE, ECE Courses

Porayar : The proposed National Institute of Technology at Karaikal would start functioning from 2010-11 academic year, offering Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering courses, according to a top official of the NIT.

The intake for 2010-11 would be 150 for these two branches. Of these seats, 90 would be reserved for students of the union territories of Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar islands, while other seats would be filled on an all-India basis, Dr M Chidambaram, NIT Director, Tiruchirapalli, said.

Chidambram, A Mentor for the new institution, said. NIT would start functioning from a makeshift location at Karaikal until it gets own buildings. Other courses like Mechanical, Civil Engineering would would soon be introduced, he said.

If there was any difficulty in finding a location, first year classes would be held at NIT campus, Tiruchirapalli, he said.

He was speaking after visiting the site for the proposed NIT at Thiruvettakudi in Karaikal (an enclave of Puducherry) yesterday. The Puducherry government has procured 300 acres of land for the purpose. He was accompanied by Karaikal District Collector N Vasanthakumar.

Union Minister of State for Planning Narayanaswamy had recently announced that Rs 300 crore would be allotted to set up NIT at Karaikal and that the Centre would also allow Rs 20 crore yearly grant for seven subsequent years.
