Bangalore: Recent racist attacks in Australia have not deterred Bangalore University (BU) from signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Deakin University (DU), Australia on Tuesday.

The first phase will have a student-exchange and a staff-exchange programme and exchange of educational resource materials.

DU country-head India, Ravineeth Pahua, said the university has taken various security measures for Indian students across all campuses. The university has also increased security on campus said Pahua.

Indian students have also been sensitized about Australian culture. Students going to DU under the MoU will have will not have to worry about accommodation.

Every year, the university receives 6,000 international students from 80 different countries. Of these, 20% are Indians and 25 percent Chinese.

DIRI will produce a minimum of 200 and up to 500 PhD students in the first five years. The required allocation for financial contribution will be from the state government to establish DIRI in Bangalore.

BU will provide all necessary non-financial support and other infrastructure for establishing the research unit in DIRI. In fact, the university has all the infrastructure and necessary faculty for disciplines such as nano-technology and bio-technology.
