Girl moves HC against DU for not admitting her in LLB course

The Delhi High Court sought a response from Delhi University (DU) on the plea of a girl student who was allegedly denied admission in LLB course despite having the rank much above the last admitted candidate in OBC category.

Issuing a notice to the university, Justice Kailash Gambhir sought the response by September 30 on a petition filed by Salma Khan seeking a direction to DU to give her admission in the three year law degree course.

Filing the petition through counsel R K Saini and Sitab Ali Chaudhary, Khan said it was "an illegal, arbitrary, discriminatory, unjust and irrational action on part of the university in not giving her admission against the vacant 50 seats in LLB course for the session 2011-2014."

The counsel told the court that Khan had qualified the entrance test held on June 12 and scored the rank of 444, which is much above the last admitted candidate with the rank of 1017 in the OBC category. Claiming that 50 seats are still falling vacant, the lawyer said despite Khan being an eligible candidate and her participation in the counseling held on July 13, she was not given admission in the course.

On inquiry, the candidate was told that the admission has been put on hold as a plea seeking clarification on the verdict pertaining to 27 percent quota for OBC candidates was pending before the Supreme Court, as per the petition.

On August 18, the apex court had given its clarification and the university had held the Open House Counseling on August 20, following which admissions were given to students who were placed much below her rank but she was denied admission.
