Toppers prefer Osmania Medical College despite Telangana heat

Updated on: Wednesday, July 20, 2011

The ongoing turbulence in Telangana region seems not to have deterred the Eamcet toppers in medicine stream to take admission in Osmania Medical College (OMC). Admissions to the medical colleges began all over the state on Tuesday through the online system.

The first two rank holders hailing from Andhra region took admission in OMC. "There is nothing to fear about the ongoing disturbance in Hyderabad or Telangana region. Once we become doctors, we have to serve all the people irrespective of caste, creed, region and nation. OMC has the best faculty among all the colleges and I have decided to join the college," said topper Himaja.

Vice-chancellor of NTR University of Health Sciences I V Rao and registrar T Venugopala Rao handed over the admission cards to the first two rank holders to formally mark the opening of the counselling session on the university campus here on Tuesday.

There were apprehensions among academicians and experts whether the students from Seemandhra region would take admission in Telangana colleges in the wake of the unrest in the region. "We were wondering whether the prevailing tension in the T-region could force the toppers to ignore good colleges like OMC. But it's heartening that the students had decided to go ahead with their preferences," a senior faculty of the NTR university said.

While those in the rank list were allowed to take part in the online counselling session from any of the four centres -Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Vijayawada, the toppers attended the counselling at the NTR Health University here. Second ranked Nusum Umamaheswari of Darsi in Prakasam district also chose to join OMC citing good teaching facilities.

Third ranked Nalluri Snehitha, who attended the counselling in Hyderabad, also opted for OMC. There are 4,350 seats in both government and private medical colleges. Counselling is being held for 3,369 seats after leaving the management quota seats. Of the 3,369 seats, 1,900 seats are available in government colleges and 1,225 seats in 'A' category private colleges and 245 seats in `B' category colleges.

In the dental stream 1,780 seats are available in two government and 18 private colleges. Of these, counselling would be held for 180 seats in government colleges and 1,116 seats in private colleges under both A and B categories. Officials said the counselling for the first batch would go on till July 25.
