Education in Malaysia broadly consists of a set of stages which include: Preschool Primary education Secondary education Tertiary education Postgraduate. Only Primary Education in Malaysia is mandated by law, hence it is not a criminal offence to neglect the educational needs of a child after six years of Primary Education.

Primary and Secondary education in government schools are handled by the Ministry of Education, but policies regarding tertiary education are handled by the Ministry of Higher Education, created in 2004.

Why study in Malaysia?

About Malaysian institutions

The education sector in Malaysia has made significant advancement over the past decade and is making a name as a centre of educational excellence in South-East Asia. Malaysia has established 17 public educational institutions (which include an International Islamic University), 5 foreign university branch campuses, 21 private universities, more than 500 private colleges. It also has 32 international schools and 14 expatriate schools.

Renowned foreign universities from the UK and Australia have set up branch campuses in Malaysia. Higher institutions from the US, Canada, France, Germany and New Zealand are offering twin as well as franchised degree programmes in partnership with Malaysian colleges and universities.

Admission Requirements

The general academic requirements for admission into undergraduate degree programmes is as follows:

Senior High School/Senior Secondary School/Other Certificates from the government schools (with the period of at least 11 to 12 years of study from Primary to Higher Secondary). Applicants from countries which require them to pass the university entrance examination have to submit the result of this examination together with their applications forms; OR

  • GCE 'A' Level examination obtained at one sitting;OR
  • Any other certificate that is recognised by the Senate of the University as equivalent to the above.

English and Bahasa Malaysia are the two primary languages used for instruction in the University, depending on the programme of study. Applicants wishing to pursue their studies in programmes with English as a medium of instruction must;

  • Pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • Pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)OR
  • Pass the Malaysian University English Language Test (MUET).

Applicants who are unable to submit satisfactory results in any of the above tests may take up language proficiency courses at the University to fulfil the admission requirements.
