Madras zone and Andhra Pradesh continue to dominate the Joint Entrance Examination

Madras zone and Andhra Pradesh continued to dominate the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), accounting for four of the top 10 ranks in the entrance examination for admission to the IITs. There was a marked improvement in the performance of candidates from Tamil Nadu, with Chennai's Sooraj Narayan, who took the 54th rank, topping the list of students who qualified from the state.

R Sarathi, chairman of JEE (Advanced) in the IIT-Madras zone, said Tamil Nadu's performance could not be compared with that of AP, but onefifth of all students who took the test in the state qualified for admission to the 16 IITs and ISM, Dhanbad.

Thirty-six of the top-100 all-India rankers are from Madras zone, which outperformed all other zones in the country. "The success rate for students from Tamil Nadu is higher than in previous years. This means that more students are focusing on preparing for the test, and preparing well," Sarathi said.

Pallerla Sai Sandeep Reddy of Andhra Pradesh bagged the No.1 rank in the country with a score of 332 out of 360.

A Ravichandra took the No. 2 rank, while Muppirala Vishwa Virinchi and Sibbala Leena Madhuri secured the seventh and eighth ranks. Sibbala scored the highest marks among girls and is also the OBC first ranker.

A total of 21,110 students qualified, from the 1.16 lakh students who took the test on June 2. Madras zone consists of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Andhra Pradesh accounted for the lion's share of the 4,282 candidates who qualified in the test from the Madras zone, with students from the state bagging the first, second, seventh and eighth ranks.

"I want to do a BTech in mechanical engineering, and I know that IIT-Madras has a German collaboration. I want to study under the best," said state topper Sooraj Narayan.

IIT-Madras officials said candidates who qualified will from Sunday have to maketheir choiceof specialisation from IITs' various departments in the institutes' common portal. Studentswillhave to indicate their choice by June 30.
Selected candidates will have to appear for counselling at IIT-Madras from July 4to8.They willbeinformedof their counselling date by mail.
