Sexual harassment, ragging, early marriage and lack of educational institutions are among the major problems highlighted in a report on the education of girls belonging to religious minorities in the country.

In its report, the committee on Minority Girls' Education, headed by chairman of the National Commission for Minority

Educational Institutions, M S A Siddiqui, said lack of availability of educational institutions, high dropout rate and poor performance of teachers contribute to the problems in their education.

The panel also highlighted lack of girls hostel facilities, distance of schools and colleges, lack of transport facilities for girl students, their security and sexual harassment as main problems in this area.

"Ragging in professional colleges, fixed schooling hour in rural and tribal areas, poor economic condition, social problems like early marriage and dowry and lack of implementation of various government schemes are the major problems of minority girls education in the country," it said.

The committee was assigned to look into the ways and means to ameliorate the grave situation of girls of minority communities, in general, and that of Muslim girls in particular.
