The paper for final year students sitting for their bachelor's in education (BEd) exam in Marathi had a question less. Also, MCom students taking the semester 2 examination spotted an error in an objective question in the costing paper on Sunday.

BEd students were taking the school management paper when they noticed that question five was missing on Monday. Students said question four was succeeded by question six.

University officials said they sent out the fifth question within minutes of the exam beginning. "We could spot the error quickly. Also, the question paper in English and Hindi did not have any missing questions," said controller of examinations Deepak Wasave. The Marathi translator probably skipped question five, he added.

"In the fourth question, there was an error for one mark and no correction was made," a student from MMK College said. Wasave clarified that the university had sent the errata to all colleges.

Meanwhile, Padma V Deshmukh (55) will on Tuesday become the first lady exam controller to inherit the seat of thorns at the University of Mumbai.

The associate professor of microbiology and vice principal of CHM College, Ulhasnagar, said, "I know it is a big, big system I am getting into. I want to get into the system, understand it completely and then set my strategy to improve the system."

The state government will invoke the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) against teachers if they do not call off their boycott of exam-related work within the next few days, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Monday.
