Indian Institute of Technology Madras has developed a new GPS enabled technology and mobile application to give more facilities to the passengers. Using this facility the passengers identify suitable public transport. The users are supposed to download the application and feed the boarding and destination point in the city.

This application is named as "RAFT". It provides the information about the immediately available service among MTC bus, EMU and metro train and it gives information about the probable and approximate time of travel also. This will be launched on November 15th. It is decided to install this in 150 buses for 25 routes in the city. The credit of introducing this goes to Associate Profession Lelitha Devi (Transportation Engineering Division and Dept of Civil Engineering).

The data sent from the buses fitted with GPS equipment will be collected at the laboratory in IIT campus. The centre information about arrival and travel time will be available in on line.

The technology is useful in choosing the bus route number and also to select a bus stop on the route. The application will give information regarding the correct position of the bus and the arrival time at a stop.

Once we feed the boarding and destination, we may get from GPS application the list of buses, trains and metro rail services available and their timings.

3 IIT Alumni launched the company called Geotogg which develops solutions to urban transportation problems. Although who represents Geotogg said that they have sourced the stops, routes, fleet sixe from MTC. In fact 3500 stops are mapped. They are planning to cover another 2000 also. It is said that the schedule, networks and routes of all EMU trains will also be brought under control.
